Time to meet another member of the Surrey Cover Band! This month is the turn of Tom, our sensational lead guitarist and all round good egg!
Tom, tell us about yourself.
I'm a guitarist based in Surrey. Originally a midlands born lad and an avid Wolverhampton Wonderers fan, I am currently living in Guildford, where I have been for about 5 years.
What song reminds you of your childhood?
The 'Back To The Future' overture! Seriously! Isn't this the same for everyone my age?!
What was the first CD you bought?
The first CD I remember buying was Limp Bizkit's 'Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavoured Water.' I remember throwing a right tantrum when my Mum said I wasn't allowed it due to the 'parental advisory' logo on the cover. Of course I never told this to my Dad and he said I could have it straight away the next time we were in Sainsbury's. Mother wasn't best pleased about that...This certainly wasn't the first CD I ever listened to, however. I grew up on Michael Jackson, Mike and the Mechanics, The Eagles, The Shadows and many others!
What was the first band you saw perform live?
My first proper gig was the Red Hot Chilli Peppers at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. I was 13 and queued fro 6 hours or so to get right to the front! As I could have only been about 5 foot tall at the time, I spent the whole gig getting crushed against the barrier, which wasn't fun - but hey, that's just Rock n Roll ain't it?!
Do you have any musical guilty pleasures?
The Corrs. Yes, I love the Corrs.
What was the first gig you ever played?
The first gig I ever played was with my old metal band 'A Clear Conscience.' It was at a place called The Little Civic in Wolverhampton. We were supporting another very popular local metal band and the place was sold out - to out amazement, most of the people there had come to see us! I was 13 at the time, so it seemed nuts! As we walked out through the door to get on stage, I'll never forget the whole crowd was chanting 'A-C-C...A-C-C!' It was mental! Couldn't have asked for a better first gig.
What's the best gig you've ever played?
This one's a tricky one as there are a few contenders! This year I was lucky enough to play on the main stage at a couple of festivals - Pennfest in Hazlemere and Glass Butter Beach in North Wales. Glass Butter Beach was crazy because on the same day, Less Than Jake were headlining, and the night before Professor Green was on. It was amazing to be on the bill with these guys. Pennfest was great too - it's always amazing to get the opportunity to play on a really big stage! Another favourite was the Isle of Wight Festival. Mainly because of the vibe of the place - it's just a really amazing festival. Never thought I'd be lucky enough to play there - and I saw Fleetwood Mac later that day. What an experience!
What is your favourite song to play in the 4TTF set?
I couldn't pick one song to be honest! There's a few! A few I particularly enjoy playing are:
Treasure, Bruno Mars
Locked out of Heaven, Bruno Mars
Rock With You, Michael Jackson
American Boy, Estelle feat. Kanye West...You should hear my rapping skills - Kanye, step aside!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to chill out with friends, listen to music or watch TV. And of course, play guitar (but that goes without saying!) I try and go to the gym a lot, as keeping fit and healthy is important to me. I also love watching box sets (Breaking Bad!!!) and films.
