Happy February from your favourite Surrey wedding band!
Whilst we’re gearing up for another banner year of wedding entertainment, we thought we’d turn our blog’s attention to introducing you to our lovely trumpet player, Steve!
MEET OUR TRUMPET PLAYER
"I’ve always wanted to play the trumpet, right from an early age I remember being forced(!) to listen to classical music as a kid by my parents, but the sound of the trumpet called out to me. I knew then I wanted to play a trumpet. Fast forward a few years and here I am, professional trumpeter touring the UK and Europe with various function bands, theatre shows, big bands and brass ensembles. I absolutely love it!”
“Recent highlights include UK album launch tour with Tom Grennan, Durham Brass Festival with Oompah Brass, Jeff Hooper Big Band, and starting up a Latin-twisted New Orleans Brass Band called Fat Cat Brass last summer, tours in Norway with Johnny Cash Roadshow and one-off gigs in Spain and Germany. One of my favourite what I like to call ‘seat-of-the-pants-gig’ happened just before Christmas with a performance of Karl Jenkin’s Christmas suite ‘Stella Natalis’. The suite is written for choral ensemble, organ, strings, percussion and one trumpet! I was so far out of my comfort zone having to play straight classical style music and piccolo trumpet for the first time ever, but it went really well with basically no rehearsal and just a brief run through that I’m very much looking forward to playing more classical music in the weeks, months and years to come.”
“I love playing with 4TTF, such fun and a great party vibe but being a brass player of course the songs I love to play are those by Earth, Wind and Fire and Stevie Wonder. Favourite one? Tricky, but September and Superstition can battle it out at the top of my list. I was fortunate to see EWF last year for the second time, and they still blow me away! Having said all that, from an entertainment point of view, Bruno Mars and his music is right up there. Dancing/choreography/musicianship all second to none throughout the whole band. Did I mention Blame It On The Boogie? How good is that song??”
“Favourite thing to do in my spare time? Do freelance musicians ever have spare time?? What I love to do when I’m not playing music myself is listen to my kids playing music, I know they’re both going to go on to do bigger and better things than I ever will have accomplished!”
“Favourite artist at the moment? My tastes change so it will vary, but I’ve just discovered a fabulous trombone player called Carol Jarvis who has the most amazing sound. Keeping more to current pop music, I like Rag’n’Bone man and I’ve already mentioned Bruno Mars. My musical tastes are very eclectic so I love listening to trumpeters like Derek Watkins and Mike Lovatt as much as an organ recital at Leicester Cathedral. I’ve got gigs booked in to go and see Mnozil Brass (look them up if you’ve never heard of them), Tower of Power and secretly I'm excited to take my daughter to see Panic! At The Disco.”
“Dream song on a function gig? There isn’t one that jumps out at me as I enjoy the variety of the music that we play in 4TTF, but there’s a live version of Diana Ross’ ‘Touch Me In The Morning’ which would make for a great slow dance at a wedding. Oh, and more Stevie…"
